Summertime Pruning

maple needing summertime pruningBonsai trees are growing like mad now which means constant pruning is the order of the day. Constant pinching and pruning will help to develop nice full canopies. Don''t be afraid! Jump right in and the tree will respond with healthy fuller growth.

If you want to get smaller leaves on deciduous trees such as maples, there is still time to strip all the leaves off and put the tree out of bright sunlight, reduce watering and wait for the new leaves to develop (increasing watering as the tree''s needs dictates).

This is also a good time to transplant or root prune tropical trees. The active growth season will have them settled in in no time and the tree will be happier this winter for it.

Hold off on transplanting or root pruning evergreens. This is a task better done during the autumn months. Bear in mind that if the tree is severely pot bound, then by all means transplant it. Just be sure to keep it out of drafts, bright light and keep it evenly moist until a new flush of growth is visible. Once your tree starts actively growing again, bring it back into dappled shade and resume normal care.
